Who exactly are we judging?

Judges gavel and feather pen.

Some days it can appear like there is no shortage of people to judge (including judging ourselves).

But when we judge, who exactly are we judging?

When we judge someone we may believe we are judging the person or something about who they are in the current moment, but this would be an illusion.

It’s time for a MindShift Moment…

In every moment each of us is creating ourselves anew.

While our physical shells may appear the same, who we are, what we believe, etc. changes from moment to moment as we continually take in new information both consciously and subconsciously.

With this understanding, we can begin to understand that we and everyone else is no longer who we were in the past even if that past was only a moment ago and when we judge somebody, we are actually judging who they were, not who they are in the present moment.

Who they were in the past, even if it was a moment ago, is not who they are in the present moment. Just as who you were a moment ago is not who you are in the present moment.

With this understanding, it becomes easier to see that judgment of another is judging someone who no longer exists. It is a judgment about the past person who no longer exists in the present moment.

With this understanding the next time you feel the need to Judge someone, stop for a moment and ask yourself, “Am I judging who they are here in this very moment, or am I judging who they were just a moment ago.”, “Am I judging them based on who I am now, or who I was a moment ago?”

In the beginning, you may find this new approach can be a little tricky and it may take some time for it to become more natural. More than likely your first instinct will be to judge. When that happens try to look past the desire to judge the person and see past their physical shell.

With practice, you will see the shell will look the same, but the person you are about to judge no longer exists. You will see there is nothing in the now to judge.

Eventually and with enough conscious intention, you will see past the shell that physically represents the person you wanted to judge and see it as simply a shell that continuously houses a new version of that person in each moment.

When you can see past their shell you will see there is nothing to judge and taking it a step further you will find nothing but pure love in them, and in you.
