It’s time to clear out your old file cabinet.

Knee to workboot view of man on file cabinet.

Imagine a filing cabinet that is full of old papers, most of which have been around as long as you have. They are yellowed, out of date, filled with miss information and not needed anymore.

As you look at the papers, you think how you would love to put new papers in the cabinet but there isn’t any room and buying another cabinet is not an option.

You know that in order to file the new information into the file cabinet you have, you will have to get rid of all the old papers that you no longer need. It’s a big job and you know it will take time, patience and repetition, but you also know it will be worth it in the end and you begin the process of clearing out all the old papers you no longer need.

Your subconscious is like a filing cabinet.

Like a filing cabinet, over time your subconscious becomes filled with information that is incorrect, outdated and no longer serves you.

Like the file cabinet, in order to make room for accurate and relevant information, you need to let go of the old, outdated and incorrect information that no longer serves you.

Like cleaning out the file cabinet, the job will take time, patience and repetition, but it will be worth it in the end.

In order to let it go, it helps to know where it came from.

From the time you were born (and earlier, but I’ll save that talk for another day), your subconscious is filled with information in the form of beliefs about your world, your place in it and who you are.

While some of it is very helpful (like walking off the edge of a high cliff will likely result in death or serious injury), much of it is not.

In truth, most of the information that settles in your subconscious is based on incorrect lack beliefs that have been passed on to you from others. They are perceptions of another person(s), not fact.

For example: “Girls don’t play with trucks.” – This is not a fact. It is a perception.

However, because your subconscious does not know truth from fiction, and you like all of us tend to believe things those who love you say. You internalize these teachings as true and they contribute to how you view the world and yourself. From these beliefs, you also create your own personalized beliefs which are called mindsets.

For example: “I don’t play with trucks” (because I am a girl).

These beliefs (and mindsets) help form who you become in life but not necessarily who you were meant to be.

It’s time to clear out the old files.

In order to see the world, others and yourself as you truly are, you need to recognize the lack beliefs and mindsets you have are often based on fear, not fact. Once you understand this, you can begin to clear out your subconscious filing cabinet by letting go of the beliefs and mindsets that no longer serve you, replacing them with the truth. Only then can you experience freedom and become who you are meant to be.

How do you let go?

It all begins with looking at one lack belief, then the next, and the next.

Note: This same process can be used for the lack mindsets you have created for yourself as well.

For each belief, you become like an investigator by asking yourself “is it true 100% of the time?”; “are there instances where it is not true?”, what if it wasn’t true?, etc.

Once you can see the belief as a perception rather than a fact, you can create a new fact-based abundant ‘belief’ that is true for you.

For example:

  • Lack belief (perception) – “Girls don’t play with trucks” is not a fact.

  • New fact – “Some girls play with trucks.“

Notice how I did not list “All girls play with trucks.” as a new fact. Why? Because this would not be a fact as there are some girls who do not play with trucks.

Always create/choose a ‘fact’ that is true.

Rinse and Repeat…

Just like learning a new language, through repetition you can teach your brain to use this new fact and over time, it will no longer use the false belief.

How about you?

Which lack beliefs and mindsets are you ready to let go of?

Try listing 5 beliefs you have and using the quick process above, create 5 new abundance-based facts to replace them. Repeat these new facts to yourself several times a day for a week and see if you notice how you begin to catch yourself whenever the old lack beliefs pop up.
