Are you suffering to satisfy your ego?

Wooden figure on small rocks.

I was out on my bicycle the other day. I find it very peaceful and therapeutic to connect with nature and myself while getting exercise at the same time.

This particular day was a windy day and as I turned to head southward, I ran into a very strong headwind.

When I hit the strong headwind my immediate thought was to slow down and maybe even turn around and take a different route as I have a knee that will swell up and keep me from riding for days if I push it beyond its limits, but right away my ego chimed in.

It wanted me to push it, to go harder, to not let the wind slow me down, to push through at all costs, to finish what I had started.

Egos can be very convincing and self-serving.

But I have learned to listen to my body and my inner-Buddha; to keep my body, mind (ego) and soul in harmony.

When I checked in, I heard “You can do it. Just take your time, go into a lighter gear and don’t make it all about the race and the push of the ego.”

I listened to this quiet wisdom. I geared down and took it easy and was able to finish my route with a happy knee.

How about you?

Do you let your ego drive you? Do you suffer to satisfy your ego? Or do you go for balance?

It’s all about balance and listening to your inner guidance.

It’s about understanding and recognizing that sometimes our ego can actually hold us back even when it is trying to push us forward.

It’s about going within, listening and connecting to the other parts of ‘you’ – the inner-self and the physical-self for wisdom and guidance.

It’s about not suffering to satisfy your ego.
